Do not expect to receive a letter in the mail reminding you to enroll in 医疗保险. 除非你目前正在领取社会保障福利, you will need to actively enroll in 医疗保险 so go ahead and mark the start of your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) on your calendar right now. Your Initial Enrollment Period is a seven-month period encompassing the three months leading up to your 65th birthday, If you do not enroll in 医疗保险 during your Initial Enrollment Period, 你的余生可能每个月都要面临罚款.
As a brief overview, 医疗保险 is a federal program that subsidizes healthcare services. Program eligibility is restricted to individuals 65 and older as well as some younger individuals who receive social security disability benefits or have end stage renal disease. There are two 医疗保险 offerings – (1) Original 医疗保险 and (2) 医疗保险 Advantage.
Original 医疗保险, which is comprised of 部分 and B部分, is run by the federal 政府ernment. 部分, 医院保险, helps pay for inpatient hospital/skilled nursing costs as well as some costs associated with the inpatient stay, 比如某些家庭保健. B部分, 医疗保险, helps pay for medically necessary services/supplies outside of a hospital as well as some preventative services. You can add Part D and/or Medigap, both run by private insurance companies, to Original Part D helps pay for the costs of outpatient prescription drugs. Medigap supports some of the costs that 部分 and B do not cover, as well as a portion of the copays and deductibles associated with Original 医疗保险. 报名参加D部, you must be enrolled in either 部分 or B部分 while enrolling in Medigap requires you to be enrolled in both 部分 and B部分.
Advantage (Part C) plans are required to cover everything that 部分 and B部分 cover. In addition, they may pay for additional expenses that Original 医疗保险 does not cover (e.g.、牙齿、视力和/或听觉). 医疗保险优先计划有几种类型, all of which are managed by private insurance companies and 政府ernment regulated. Most 医疗保险 Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage. On the other hand, Medigap plans are never allowed to be added to 医疗保险 Advantage Plans.
Whichever plan you choose, be sure to enroll at the correct time or risk a lifelong penalty. If you are currently receiving health insurance through your or your spouse’s current employer who employs 20 or more people, you may be entitled to a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that allows you to delay enrolling in 医疗保险 B部分 until the employer coverage ends. 如果您没有资格享受特殊注册期, you will presumably want to enroll during your Initial Enrollment period, the seven-month period surrounding your 65th birthday that was previously discussed. 政府, by calling social security at 1-, or in-person at your local social security office.
If you are not eligible for a Special Enrollment Period and miss your Initial Enrollment Period, a late enrollment fee may be applied to your monthly B部分 and Part D premiums for as long as you continue that coverage. The B部分 late enrollment fee is equal to 10% of the standard B部分 premium for each full twelve-month period that passes following the end of your Initial Enrollment Period. D部分, the late enrollment fee is equal to 1% of the standard Part D premium for each full month that passes during which you did not have creditable drug coverage. 所有这些都要说, we strongly encourage you to determine your enrollment period long before you plan on enrolling in 医疗保险.
和大多数财务决策一样, 医疗保险 elections are highly dependent on your individual situation. 考虑到医疗保险的极端复杂性, we encourage you to learn more about your options before you make any decisions. If you want to read more about 医疗保险 and the enrollment process, 看看这些可信的资源:
